New DJ Agency Forges Path for Alternative Electronic Music in Hong Kong

MÖTH AGENCY is a new Hong Kong-based DJ agency looking to diversify the electronic music scene locally and in the South-East Asian region. With roots in the queer rave community, MÖTH’s DJ’s push the boundaries of an underground sound that is genre-fluid and ever expanding. From hard techno to gabber, baile funk, hyperpop and old school Jungle, the range of music selected is as unique and subversive as the community MÖTH is starting to build.

Beyond music, community stands at the heart of MÖTH’s mission, with the Agency collaborating with artists, designers and non-profits, such as local trans non-profit Quarks, to host a broad selection of events and workshops alongside their parties.

DJs:

AHURA MAZDA (@ahuramazdathe aka PersianPussy3000)

“MÖTH is a lot about setting the tone in Hong Kong. When we have people working the door that look like queer punks, the tone is set. We thought “it doesn’t matter how many people come to our events, we just need to exist”.

In my sets I want people to enter the techno world as if they were in a trance - to feel totally free. And then I try to overlay that with some nostalgia, so there’s quite a few references to pop culture and politics in my sets. I want people to have something to reflect on in that meditative state.”

loveless (@__love__less)

“We all respect each other, it’s like artistry. It’s bigger than being a DJ, we treat it as an art form and we all have our own distinct style of music. I personally love really fast tracks, at least 150 BPM and more. Heavy on the distortion and noise – I went to a My Bloody Valentine gig when I was younger and it felt like being in an airplane. That’s what I’m going for with my sets. I want to play for all the Mall goths in Hong Kong.”

KATAGYAL (@yenisounds)

“90% of the time I play music that comes from Black and Brown culture because it’s the mother of a lot of music genres. My sets are so diverse because there are so many things that fall under that umbrella. It could be anything from Jungle and Footwork to Soul, Brazilian Funk, Congolese Soukous… So naturally I collect a bunch of different things but of course what I play depends on the event. I can always adapt.”

baby Diwata (@ugh.isha)

““Diwata” means fairy or muse, it’s a Tagalog word, and part of Filipino folkore. An image of a Diwata is someone in the woods, hiding. When I curate my sets I want them to have a sense of femininity, I think that comes along with my identity. I’m

really attracted to sounds that are genre-fluid and balance between energies - tracks with a kind of duality to them. A hardness and a tender, melancholic sound.”

ANGELFR0MAB0VE (@angelfromabove.hk)

“Being a dance choreographer, I gravitate towards music everyday and choose music to suit the story that my body is telling. I try to do that with the music I select when I play at a set. A few years ago I started going to raves and shows to listen to music and just dance! I love seeing people from all different spectrums come together and accept each other during these gatherings.”

Gabber Kid (@chui_chai)

“In Gabber the rhythm is really important. To me it’s really fun, there’s a melody and then the strong intensity of the heavy kick drums. Definitely old school. I really love Gabber, the history, the dance style – everything! And I want to spread that energy in Hong Kong because here it’s still very underground.”

Staff:

Yaz (Social Welfare Lead) (@yazzcoconutpoop)

“We want our events and parties to be inclusive, accessible and safe for everyone. It’s all about creating the right conditions and education to facilitate spaces where everyone is comfortable, especially queer people. Queerness is not just exclusive to sexuality. To me it’s a perspective of the world that’s different to what we’ve been told. Being subversive to social norms and status quos.”

CoketQueen (Social Welfare Team) (@coket_queen)

“In the social welfare team we want to ensure our parties, events and workshops are safe spaces. A lot of the times some basic necessities like providing free water are missing. We want everyone that joins us to feel like they are being taken care of if something happens. We’ve put together guidelines and information material on this for all the volunteers and staff that work with us and hope it will translate to wider awareness on this in Hong Kong.”

Elsa (Accounting Manager) (@elsaavdn)

“I’m a jack of all trades, running the financial accounts and looking over our social media. I joined because there’s such a lack of queer communities in Hong Kong and I want to be part of something that pushes the norm and lets artists be creative. I’m excited by everything coming up to build community, especially the workshops.”

Elaine (Graphic Designer) (@welainej)

“The colours we use at MÖTH, the faded and muted cold tones – purples, greys, browns, feel almost like vulnerable colours to me whilst still having a darkness to them. Especially the purple, there is something feminine in that colour, but not fully either. Something inbetween. It’s always felt like a queer colour for me, for some reason.”

Viola (Media/PR) (@violamingheng)

“We want to get the word out there. The community around MÖTH has so many stories to share, it’s not just the DJs and staff. Through strategic media engagement we’re hoping to not only let more people know about the agency, what we’re up to and what our vision is, but also to spotlight the experiences of the queer and alternative community in Hong Kong and beyond.”
